Mini-Conference Series 2

Twenty Years On: The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

Sustainable Development: The State of Play in Hong Kong

7 April 2017

Introduction

Sustainability is a key challenge for many aspects of our civilization and has become one of the major policy concerns in the world. In January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders in 2015 at the UN Summit, officially came into force. In Hong Kong, the Government has incorporated sustainability principles in its policies and decision-making process over the past few years. The Council for Sustainable Development, which advises the Government on priority sustainability issues, was established in 2003 as one of the initiatives to promote sustainability in Hong Kong.

In 2017 Policy Address, the Government is pressing ahead with various sustainability measures in air quality, climate change, marine cleanliness, nature conservation and waste management. For instance, collaboration with Guangdong in examining ways to reduce marine refuse has been strengthened and a notification system will be set up. In current legislative year, the Government plans to introduce the bill for implementing quantity-based municipal solid waste charging. The first Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Hong Kong will also be implemented.

As a sustainable future for Hong Kong requires the collaboration of multiple stakeholders across business, society and government, The Hong Kong Management Association 2017 Mini-Conference brings together a prominent line-up of speakers to provide a forum for senior executives to explore effective strategies to foster Hong Kong's sustainable development. Through this engagement, we hope participants will be inspired with new ideas and directions to acquire growth and sustainability of their organisations.
