Win the Top Prize of the HKMA Annual Training Award

12/6/2007

Organized by the Human Resources Development Management Committee of The Hong Kong Management Association, the results of the Individual Awards and Campaign Awards of the Award for Excellence in Training 2007 were announced on 12 June 2007 during the luncheon following the Half-Day Seminar on "Benchmark Your Training Practices with Some of the Excellent Companies".

Mr Joseph Lau, Managing Director of McDonald`s Restaurants (Hong Kong) Limited, was the keynote speaker, who shared with the participants his insight in people development. "The most important thing in my job is to make their (staff) career dreams come true," said Mr Lau. Recognizing people as the most important asset of the company, he pointed out that it is essential to protect and develop people. Mr. Lau believed that "people growth" was equivalent to "business growth". He also stressed the importance of "on-going development of people development".

Mr Lau further gave the following advice:
For senior management - a good manager should know how to train up their staff.
For HR practitioners - always remember to "train the trainers".
For employees - they have to be accountable for their own self-development.

The Presentation Ceremony of the Award will be held on Tuesday, 4 September 2007 at the 22nd Susan Yuen Memorial Lecture. This year, the Association is honoured to have Professor Lawrence Lau, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong as the guest speaker of the event.

The Award for excellence in Training was introduced by The Hong Kong Management Association in 1990 with the aim of giving public recognition to trainers and companies for the contribution that training can make to corporate results. Since 2005, the Award has included the individual category to give recognition for individual trainers who have made significant contribution to the human resources development of their companies as well as the whole community.

The judging process of the Award is simple but comprehensive. For the Campaign Awards, the participating companies were required to give a simple verbal presentation of their training to the Board of Examiners at a Shortlisting Interview. Shortlisted entries would be invited to submit a five-page summary of their training programmes. The best six entries would be selected for the final presentation seminar entitled "Benchmark Your Training Practices with Some of the Excellent Companies". The six finalists would deliver a presentation before the Panel of Adjudicators who would then decide on the winners of the Award.

All entrants of Individual Awards needed their company`s nomination to enter the judging process. They were required to submit a four-page written submission in English explaining their achievements in human resource development. Shortlisted entrants would be invited to a Presentation and Interview Session during which they would be given an opportunity to design and deliver a short training session to be followed by an interview in either English or Cantonese to the Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners would decide on the winners of the Outstanding New Trainer Awards and Distinguished Trainer Awards. The top three Distinguished Trainer Awardees would be invited to present before the Panel of Adjudicators at the final presentation seminar to compete for the Trainer of the Year Award.
